Hi Burnie,
A friend forwarded your photo album of Independence Mine to me, it brought
back lots of fond memories. Especially the winter shots. I was in Anchorage
a couple for a reunion of former members of the US Modern Winter Biathlon
Training Center, which existed at Ft. Richardson from 1960-73. During that
time there were perhaps 115 guys who trained there, we had about 48 come to
the reunion and including families, 85 people were there. One of the
highlights was a day at the Mines where we were treated to a tour through
the buildings, including the bunk house where we lived during our early
season training, each year. We could be skiing as early as late September up
there before the snow came to Anchorage. They were wonderful and carefree
times.
As I mentioned, we lived in the bunk house and used a shed across the road
for waxing skis and working on equipment. Our trails and range were located
directly east of the bunk house, below the lake.
Thank you for sharing your photos with the world.
Best wishes,
Don Nelson
